In the manga[]
Blobgoblin appears in Chapter 177, breaking a frozen Whisper's fall after he is thrown out of Nate's window by Blizzaria. After a few moments, Nate identifies him as a sight gag character, and Blobgoblin starts laughing, soon revealing it to be part of a prank show. Annoyed, Nate allows Blizzaria to freeze him, but he blows her away to protect himself. Once he notices he hurt Blizzaria, he feeds her some of his flesh, revitalizing her. He then apologizes to her for hurting her, then gives Nate his keystone.
Etymology[]
- The name "Blobgoblin" is a combination of the words "blob," referring to its amorphous appearance, and "goblin" or "hobgoblin," which are two types of mythical creatures.
- The name "Nuppefuhofu" is a corruption of the derogatory slang nupperi (ぬっぺり), used to describe a woman who applies too much makeup. This is most likely a reference to the creature's saggy appearance, which is similar to the sagging of a face under heavy makeup. It also references the Nuppeppō, the Yo-kai it was based on.
- The name "Abracadagras" is a combination of the words "abracadabra," referring to a magic trick and "gras" (greasy) referring to its deformed and plump appearance.
Origin[]
The Nuppeppō is passive and almost entirely harmless, but it has a repulsive body odor that is said to rival the smell of rotting flesh. Those who eat the flesh of a Nuppeppō are described as being granted eternal youth.
The Nuppeppō aimlessly wanders deserted streets of villages, towns and cities, often at night towards the year-end, or graveyards or abandoned temples. It is usually a solitary creature, but there have reportedly been sightings of them in groups. If encountered, the Nuppeppō is unlikely to cause a human any harm. However, its lumbering stature and foul odor may cause shock and alarm.
In Japanese legends, the Nuppefuhofu’s origin is mysterious. It is believed to be a distant relative of the Noppera-bō (known in Yo-kai Watch as Faysoff). Some scholars suggest that Nuppefuhofu may, in fact, be a botched transformation of an inexperienced shape-shifting youkai, such as a Tanuki.
Dismarelda may also be based off the Nuppeppō.
Quotes[]
- Befriended: "Nup... Nup... Nupehu? (You seem like a nice guy... you want some of my meat?)"
- Freed from the Crank-a-kai: "Nupehu... Nupehu~! (We are going to celebrate this momentous occasion... by throwing a party on my meat!)"
