Etymology[]
"Ginkaku" translates as "silver pavillion" (Japanese: 銀閣,"silver pavillion").
"Castelius II" comes from "Castle" and the roman numeral II (2), indicating it to be second.
Origin[]
Castelius II's appearance and Japanese name are based on the Ginkaku-ji ("Silver Pavillion Temple"), officially named Jishou-ji (Japanese: 慈照寺,Jishō-ji, "Shining Mercy Temple"), a Zen Buddhist temple in the Sakyo ward of Kyoto, Japan. Originally planned as a retirement villa for the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa, he ordered to have it converted to a temple after his death, and to name it after his Dharma name. Surrounded by green areas and a carefully-kept sand garden, its two-story structure was originally intended to be finished with silver foil similarly to the Kinkaku-ji's gold leaf finish (see Castelius I#Trivia), but construction was halted during the Onin War and the plan never came to fruition. However, even if technically unfinished the building is still appreciated for its sparse, austere beauty (although more pragmatic people regard it as something of a "second fiddle" to the more lavish and grandiose Kinkaku-ji).
