Etymology[]
"Cymbalina" may be a portmanteau of cymbal and Thumbelina, a Danish fairy tale.
Origin[]
Cymbalina is based on the dōbyōshi-nyōbo (銅拍子女房, "dōbyōshi lady"), one of many tsukumogami (item youkai) featured in Hyakki Yagyō picture scrolls, born from a pair of dōbyōshi (also called chappa), copper cymbals originally used in Buddhist rituals, then as musical accompaniment in kabuki plays. This youkai appears as an old hag coming out of the instrument, carrying a sutra scroll in her hands. The sound of her cymbals will curse people and force them to dance until they fall down exhausted.
In the original Japanese, the "obscure songs" mentioned in her profile and her Latin quotes are actually sutra, Buddhist canonical texts used in rituals and prayers. They are in particular an important part of Japanese Buddhism's funeral rites, which is why they are recited for restless spirits to help them reach the afterlife. Hence the recurring joke in popular culture about youkai and ghosts almost passing on entirely when they hear someone chanting a sutra.
Trivia[]
Cymbalina does not have a real life medal counterpart.
