Snack Wars (Japanese: 僕らの300円戦争,Bokura no Sanbyaku En Sensō), Yo-kai Verygoodsir (Japanese: カンペキ執事妖怪セバスチャン,Kanpeki Shitsuji Yōkai Sebasuchan), and Gourmet School Lunch Episode 1: Stew! (Japanese: 給食のグルメ 第1話「カレーライス」,Kyūshoku no Gurume Dai-1-wa "Karē Raisu) is the 38th episode of Yo-kai Watch anime series. It was broadcasted in Japan on October 3, 2014, and in the United States on September 3, 2016.
Nate tries to trade as much cheap candy as possible with a low budget, in preparation for a school trip. When Whisper comes down with the Yo-kai flu, the "butler" Yo-kai Verygoodsir takes over his job until he gets better. During lunchtime, Nate gets inspirited by an unknown Yo-kai and tries to make the most of his stew.
The Japanese title of the first segment is a reference to the 1985 novel called Bokura no Nanokakan Sensou (ぼくらの七日間戦争).
The store Nate visits is the exact same place seen previously in Yo-kai Spenp.
The tube-shaped candy Bear wins in a crane game machine has a design that resembles the Pringles mascot.
The venus fly trap plants Robonyan shows off to Nate resemble Piranha Plants from the Super Mario series.
The sequence when Nate imagines the candy being combined into a mechanical robot parodies various mecha anime that is popular in Japan, along with Whisper's appearance resembling Deathler from the anime Space Battleship Yamato.
This is the first episode that Robonyan fails Nate's request.
The titles on Amazon Instant Video are incorrectly called "Our 300 Yen War", "The Perfect Butler Yo-kai Verygoodsir" and "The School Lunch Gourmet: Episode 1 'Curry Rice'", respectively.
In the original Japanese, Jibanyan sings to the tune of Gera Gera Po Song when he covers his ears to annoy Verygoodsir.
The scene where Nate depressingly laments about the last piece of curry is a direct reference to the anime Ashita no Joe.
It would be ironically parodied later on in the anime series during EP095, as well as the Yo-kai Rocky Badboya parodying the main protagonist from the source material.
Dub Differences[]
Curry was renamed to stew. Though, rice is present on the dish and isn't usually seen in most stew dishes.
References to the amount of money Nate had for snacks was removed in the English dub.
Errors[]
After Nate spends all his pocket money to buy snacks he had calculated earlier, he's shown spending extra money in the scene where Robonyan attempts to use to crane game machine for snacks. This error was written over in the English dub.
In the English dub, one of the cookies that Nate's mother baked still has "Keita" on the soccer shirt-shaped cookie.
Verygoodsir's medal doesn't have the Yo-Motion symbol added in the English dub.
The English dub title for the Gourmet School Lunch segment in this episode refers to it as "Episode 1" despite the subsequent titles all using "Meal (number)" instead.
