Etymology[]
His title Enma Neko'ou (Japanese: 閻魔猫王 Enma Nekoō) literally translates to "Cat King Enma", and is taken from taking "Great King Enma" (Japanese: 閻魔大王 Enma Daiō) and replacing the kanji for "great" with "cat".
His given name Matatabi is possibly derived from the silver vine plant, which is known as matatabi in Japanese, and is a popular cat treat, due to having an effect on cats similar to catnip. The "Mata-" part may be derived from Nekomata, a type of cat youkai in Japanese folklore.
Origin[]
Being a King Enma, he is based on Yama, who is a deity of Hindu origin introduced into Japan by Buddhist monks, with the Buddhist version has Yama being is a dharmapala (wrathful god) said to judge the dead and preside over the Narakas ("Hells" or "Purgatories") and the cycle of saṃsāra.
