Yo-kai Watch: Medal Wars[]
Yo-kai Watch: Ukiukipedia[]
In the anime[]
Gusto is a major Yo-kai in Yo-kai Watch: Forever Friends. Along with Kappa and Zashiki-warashi, he is summoned by Jack after he obtains the Yo-Kai Watch Elder Zero to test the watch's abilities before being interviewed to determine their usefulness. During said interview, Gusto claims both his special skill, hobby, and strength is sleeping and dozes off. Later on, he wakes up and accidentally uses his "secret power", but this is just farting.
Unlike the other two Yo-kai, Gusto accompanies the group as they try to find Tamamo-no-Mae, unintentionally finding her when trying to order Oban-yaki from her while she was disguised as the group realizes a normal human should be unable to acknowledge his presence.

After cornering and stunning Tamamo no Mae at Mirror Pond, Gusto is used to defeat the Yo-Kai by using his Soultimate Move. While he isn't there when the group learns of their next destination, he ends up on the train with them as they head to the Yo-Kai World.
He serves as a background character until the fight with fight with Karasu Tengu, summoned after Tamamo failed to deal any damage to him. While he was originally summoned to remove the Tengu's tornadoes (something Gusto claims he can't do), he gets sucked into the tornadoes when they merge, transforming him into Kaibyou Kamaitachi and quickly overpowering the opponent before being defeated in a single attack by Shien.
Along with Zashiki-warashi and Kappa, he gets powered up by Kenshin Amaterasu and the Yo-Kai Watch Elder God into his Godside Form to serve as backup for the Kenshin. Similar to before, this new form easily defeats the enemy before they transform and overpower him.
Etymology[]
Nekomata is named after and based on the youkai Nekomata, whose name has the characters for "Cat" and "Repetition", respectfully.
Kaibyou Translates to "Monster Cat", and Kamaitachi may refer to the Yo-kai of the same name.
Neko'ou (Japanese: 猫王 Nekoō) literally means "Cat King", and Bastet is taken from the ancient Egyptian goddess of the same name.
Nekomata's English name Gusto, refers to his enthusiastic attitude and his association with the Wind attribute. According to Brent Pendergrass[1], Gusto was meant to be Blazion's name early in the localization process.
Trivia[]
- One of the past Lord Enma, Matatabi, also bears the title "Cat King", but it is unknown if there is a connection between the two characters.
- Gusto's Transformation, Kaibyou Kamaitachi, while looking like a Shadowside Form, does not actually play the sound effect when using Shadowside Yo-kai. In Yo-kai Watch 4, his prompt simply says 'Transform,' rather than 'Shadowside,' and also does not play the Shadowside sound effect. Curiously, Kaibyou Kamaitachi does have a Keystone with similar design features that all Shadow Keystones share, but it is unnaturally black, instead of the white color most Keystones have. Overall, it is not confirmed for certain if Kaibyou Kamaitachi is a Shadowside Form or not, but the signs point to the answer being no.
- He is the only Yo-kai to change Tribe in his Godside form. This only applies to Yo-kai Watch: Wibble Wobble, though.
- He, alongside Jack, are the first characters from the Yo-kai Watch: Forever Friends world to have English names, revealed via volume 17 of the Yo-kai Watch manga.
