In the anime[]
In EX031, he follows Nate around, but inspirits everyone Nate interacted with. Initially, Nate summoned Shmoopie, Komasan, Komajiro, Happierre, Venoct, and Manjimutt to try and give him advice on how to get rid of his scary face, but he explains he could not do anything they say since he never changed his face for centuries. He managed to look less scary after Toiletta gave him a makeover.
Etymology[]
- Hairum Scarum is a corruption of "Scary Hair" which has a latin write.
- Flequipilante combines "Flequillo" (Fringe) and "Horripilante" (creepy).
Origin[]
Otoroshi is based on the ancient youkai of the same name, appearing as a hunched creature covered in a wild, messy mane, with blue or red skin and large tusks. Very little is known of these creatures, but they will perch on top of roofs, old castle walls and temple gates while masking their presence, and jump down to attack when they sense a wicked soul approaching; and when someone disrespects or causes a disturbance in the places they protect, they will make loud, thumping noises to scare them away. In spite of their frightening appearance (their name is a bastardization of osoroshii, "terrifying"), they are righteous beings loyal to guardian deities, who won't forgive evildoers and those who pray to the kami with wicked motives in their heart.
