Etymology[]

Kanibōzu translates to “Crab Monk”

Origin[]

Kanibouzu is based on the youkai of the same name (蟹坊主) meaning "crab monk"; an extremely dangerous youkai that once took residence in the Kanidera temple in the Kai region (now Yamanashi), hiding inside the pond and devouring the monks one by one. Only an errant monk who stopped to rest at the temple managed to resist the youkai's illusions, and upon solving the mystery he gathered the townsfolk to drain the pond: what appeared before them was a monstrous crab the size of two tatami, sitting on a pile of human bones.

The face on his carapace is likely in reference to the heikegani, a Japanese crab whose carapace is shaped in a way that makes it resemble a human face.
