"This string-pulling spirit controls the destiny of all humanity. It's up to you whether you go along with it or decide to fight fate!"

Kat Kraydel (Japanese: あやとりさま Ayatori-sama) is a Boss Yo-kai introduced in Yo-kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters, and can be found on the 6th floor of the Divine Paradise after beating the rest of the Divine Paradise.

Appearances[]

Biology[]

Kat Kraydel's face looks like a Buddha statue, with a jewel, or perhaps an eye, in the middle of her forehead. She has a golden Dharma Wheel behind her. Her lower half resembles a spider's abdomen with black and green stripes. Much like a spider, she possesses eight arms; her upper arms are holding spools of thread. The second highest set of hands have threads connected to each finger. The arms closest to her center are playing a game of Cat's Cradle, which give her her namesake. However the lowest set of arms are empty. She wears a headdress with three eyes, with a horn at the very top.

Profile[]

Yo-kai Watch 2[]

Kat Kraydel is the final boss of the Divine Paradise, located on the Paradise's 6th floor. At first all she wants to do is play the a game of Cat's Cradle, inviting the player to play with her. When the player asks Whisper about who Kat Kraydel is, Whisper tries to look it up on his Yo-kai Pad, but then the pad's battery dies, causing Whisper to panic and create numerous lies about Kat Kraydel, claiming that she is a violent entity, (which could not be more wrong) and instigates a battle with her.

During battle, all that the player can do is knock out her eyes which will hurt her. After knocking out all three eyes, she is immobilized, allowing the player a chance to attack her.

After being defeated, it's revealed that Kat Kraydel wasn't harmful at all. She saw the battle as a fun little game, revealing more of its kind nature, much to Whisper's embarrassment. After thanking the player for entertaining her, she warps them back to their room, where they wake up in bed and wonder if the entire encounter was only a dream. Should the player return and rematch Kat Kraydel a second time, she now has a chance to drop her rare item, the Paradise Ball.

Yo-kai Watch Blasters[]

Kat Kraydel appears as a boss in the second half of Chapter 11, in the mission 'Spin the Thread of Fate'. Completing this missions gives 4600 Oni Orbs. She can also be battled later in Big Boss mode afterwards.

Strategy[]

Kat Kraydel is easily the hardest boss in Yo-kai Watch 2, tied with Kabuking from Psychic Specters. She packs powerful attacks with huge element coverage, and is able to prevent the Yo-kai Wheel from rotating, which usually does as soon as the battle starts. Given its huge damage output and vast health pool, this battle should not be approached unless the team is max level or as close as possible to that, and a slow approach is generally not recommended as the player is extremely unlikely to outheal the damage taken and very few Yo-kai in the game are able to withstand more than two moves in a row.

A good team for this boss should include a physical core, which normally features Snartle, Shogunyan and Sgt. Burly, as the lead, and some bulky/support Yo-kai on the back row (Slippery Yo-kai are mostly advisable because the boss is able to Inspirit the entire front row without the player being able of rotating them out, and Slurpent is likely one of the best ones to bring in this fight). As for the items, the front row should ideally be equipped with high-leveled Soul Gems that increase the odds for critical hit, like the Demuncher Soul (specifically on Shogunyan, since its ability further increases critical hit damage), or that give health back, like the Dracunyan Soul (which might be slightly less effective but can reduce the need for health-restoring items), while Burly's Wristband on its namesake is also a good idea; the back row should include Souls like Mermother's Soul, which boosts adjacent Yo-kai's stats, or any health-restoring Soul like Elder Bloom, Nurse Tongus or Auntie Heart's. The player should also stack up on food as much as possible, both for healing and restoring the Soul Meter, and bring plenty of talismans.

When the battle starts, the player is able to hit Kat Kraydel's eyes, which deal 800 damage each to the total health pool of the boss upon being destroyed, and trigger Snartle's Sword Hunting ability if the player brought him and he dealt the final blow. Kat Kraydel is very likely to start the battle with Sticky Thread, blocking the Yo-kai Wheel, but not dealing damage, giving the player a free turn for their own moves. It is recommended to heavily damage the eyes with multi-target Soultimate moves, as destroying all three of them will also cause Sticky Thread to end and let the player move the wheel freely. This won't be easy though, as Kat Kraydel will have two actions each turn and can roll a random element with What Will It Be?, dealing huge damage generally and even more if she happens to hit a weakness; as such, be prepared to access the item menu at any given chance.

Once all of the eyes are defeated, the boss will stagger and won't move for some turns, allowing the player to freely hit and heal. If the player has a physical core, make sure (if possible) to have Burly's Soultimate already activated before the last eye falls. When the eyes are restored, the boss will start fighting back, and it will now be able to channel its Soultimate, Enlightenment: this attack is extremely hard to survive even with the bulkiest Yo-kai in the game, so make sure to get some Mighty Medicines in advance. Keep your party healed up at any chance you get, and try to finish the battle as fast as you can, because your odds of winning will most likely get lower and lower the longer the battle lasts, as your party won't be able to survive the onslaught of attacks forever.

Etymology[]

Her Japanse name "Ayatori-sama" translates as "Lord Cat's-Cradle".

Kat Kraydel is a corruption of "Cat Cradle", a common hand-trick done with strings or threads (seeing how she is also based on a spider, using webs instead of threads).

Origin[]

Kat Kraydel is based off of Amitābha. Her design, which takes significantly after Buddha, further cements this. It is very possible that Kat Kraydel's design also takes after the Banded Orb Weaver, which is a type of spider. While unlikely, Kat Kraydel may be inspired by the spider Anansi from folklore.

Divine Paradise as well as Kat Kraydel are based on the famous Japanese short story, The Spider's Thread by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa. The story concerns Kandata, a cold-hearted criminal suffering in Hell; however, he performed a single act of compassion in his life when he chose not to crush a spider underfoot. Moved by this action, the Buddha takes the silvery thread of a spider in Paradise and lowers it down into Hell. Kandata, with all his might, tried to escape from the abyss using the thread, but quickly got tired because of the thread's great length. When he looked down, he saw many other sinners in Hell trying to escape using the spider's thread. Fearing that the rope will break from the weight, Kandata greedily shouts that the spider's thread is his and his alone. This action ultimately made the rope break, leaving Kandata and the other sinners to fall into the Pool of Blood once again. This is further confirmed by the description of the Kat Kraydel Web.

Trivia[]

  • In the English versions of the games, Kat Kraydel is referred to as female, while in the original Japanese versions, Kat Kraydel appears to be male, as it uses male pronouns.
  • One of the achievements for Yo-kai Watch 2 requires Kat Kraydel to be defeated 100 times.
