—Koalanyan (translated by Directator), Yo-kai Watch 3

In Yo-kai Watch Busters 2, he is one of the Yo-kai required to unlock Whyvern King.

Anime series[]

Biology[]

Koalnyan is a koala, taking his features from other cat Yo-kai. He has a blue swirl on his belly, a small aquamarine-colored wisp shaped tail, and wears a collar, with a greenish-blue sphere. His nose is dark green and his fur is the same color as the swirl on his stomach.

He seems to like to dance, and can only communicate using his own name and "puku puku". He also seems to be afraid of water, since he would always try to avoid it and run away from it.

By pressing Koalanyan's nose, the appearances and personalities of the people around him will change, becoming "more intense".

In the anime, his abilities differ. He has the ability to transport himself and other people between the real and cartoon world via a simple boop on the nose, after which his eyes will change color and will do a short dance, before the worlds swap. Koalanyan also has another ability in which his ears are pulled he'll do a dance and others around him will follow along with him.

Relationships[]

Directator[]

Director is able to understand and translate Koalanyan's speech, despite only being able to say "puku puku".

In Yo-kai Watch 3, Koalanyan uses his powers to help Directator film his movie. It is unknown what kind of relationship they have.

Kanami Minami[]

In the anime series, when Koalanyan was only a stuffed doll, he was owned by a young Kanami Minami.

In the anime[]

Prior Events[]

Koalanyan was originally a stuffed koala doll, who was owned by Kanami Minami when she was growing up. Years later when Kanami got hospitalized and discovers a newfound world-switching power from a mysterious whale, Koalanyan was assumingly created then.

Yo-kai Watch the Movie: The Great Adventure of the Flying Whale & the Double World, Nyan![]

Koalanyan appears in the movie, as one of the main characters.

Etymology[]

His name is a combination of koala and nyan (meow).

Trivia[]

  • Koalanyan's ability to make everyone "more intense" is likely a reference the "live action" element of the third movie, which Koalanyan made his debut in.
  • In an interview with Akihiro Hino, Koalanyan's design was inspired by the idea of a plush doll from the real world coming to life if it entered the animated world. He also said that most animals were already made into Yo-kai, so he chose a koala.
  • In the third movie, in spite of Whisper not checking to see what his name is, Nate named him.
