Etymology[]
His English name, "Kyryn," is a corruption of kirin.
Origin[]
Kyryn is based on the legendary Chinese beast Qilin, pronounced kirin in Japanese. The Qilin appears as a hooved animal with an Eastern dragon's head and mane, covered in brilliant scales and with antlers on its head (or a single horn in some depictions). Its body glitters like a gem, surrounded by a fiery aura, and its voice sounds like wind blowing through chimes. Regarded as the king of all beasts, its mere presence is an omen of great fortune, and it is said to only appear during times of peace, in countries governed by a kind-hearted ruler. According to Buddhists, the Qilin will never eat the flesh of another animal, and will only walk on clouds and water, refusing to tread on a single insect or blade of grass in its infinite kindness. It will, however, show no mercy to the wicked.
Due to Ming era court officials mistaking a gift giraffe for a Qilin, "kirin" eventually became the Japanese word for "giraffe."
