Etymology[]

He is named after and based on Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a military commander of the Minamoto clan of Japan in the late Heian and early Kamakura periods. During the Genpei War, he led a series of battles which toppled the Ise-Heishi branch of the Taira clan, helping his half-brother Yoritomo consolidate power.

He is also famous for having defeated Benkei#Origin, denying him his thousandth blade, and took him in as his retainer.

After the conclusion of the Gunpei War, his half-brother betrayed Yoshitsune out of paranoia, and eventually chased him out, capturing Yoshitsune's pregnant mistress Shizuka Gozen in the process.

Yoshitsune's flight eventually made his way to Hiraizumi, Mutsu, once again to the protection of Fujiwara no Hidehira, and lived undisturbed for a time. Hidehira's son, Yasuhira, had promised upon Hidehira's death to honor his father's wishes and continue to shelter Yoshitsune, but, giving in to pressure from Yoritomo, betrayed Yoshitsune, surrounding his Koromogawa-no-tachi residence with his troops, defeating Yoshitsune's retainers, including Benkei, and forcing Yoshitsune to commit seppuku.
