"That's right! My friends don't want to rule anything! We want to live together in peace!"
—Nathan Adams, Yo-kai Watch

"No matter what it is, if you really want to do it, Summer, then you should do it. Even if it's not ordinary."
—Nathan Adams, Yo-kai Watch Shadowside episode 44

Nathan Adams (Japanese: 天野 景太 Amano Keita), often referred to as Nate (Japanese: ケータ Kēta), is the overall main protagonist of the Yo-kai Watch series. He appears in almost all Yo-kai Watch-depicted media, as he is the main playable character of the main series video games and the main character in the Yo-kai Watch anime series.

He is a child who possesses an item called a Yo-kai Watch, which allows him to see, befriend and summon Yo-kai. Nate also despises being called "average", and so goes to great lengths to be better and even impress Katie Forester.

In Yo-kai Watch Shadowside and the alternative future world of Yo-kai Watch 4, Nathan Adams is now an adult and is no longer able to see or remember Yo-kai as his Yo-kai Watch was gone. He is now married to his childhood crush Katie Forester, and has 2 children; a daughter named Summer Adams, who owns the Yo-kai Watch Arcane, and a son named Tate Adams, who also wields it occasionally.

Nathan has a Yo-kai form, Fuu 2, which was created in the second movie. In an alternate world, he also has another Yo-kai form named Kemushi-otoko, which was made with the Kuroi Yo-kai Watch.

With Nate's variants in Yo-kai Watch: Wibble Wobble, he is considered part of the Brave Tribe and part of the Enma Tribe when fused with Lord Enma.

Hisusual appearance has a red short sleeve shirt with a white hems, a blue-and-white design on his right arm and a white star on his chest. He also wears light-gray cargo pants with a brown belt around his waist, and red, blue and white boots matching with his shirt and the Yo-kai Watch on his left wrist.

In M01, Nate wears a white hoodie with 3/4 length sleeves and a red, sleeveless open jacket over the top. He wears wide legged 3/4 length dark grey trousers and wears red trainers with white laces, tips and soles.

In M02, in the Let's Go to the Yo-kai World segment, Nate wears a white top with a black collar under an open red varsity jacket with a white collar, light beige sleeves and a small yellow star on the left of his chest. With this he wears long, slim dark blue trousers and brown loafers. In the Yo-kai World he wears a white and blue striped top under a red open hooded jacket with short white sleeves, a white zipper and a small white star on the left of his chest. With this he wears blue 3/4 length cargo pants and black trainers. At the end of the movie he wears a red Hawaiian shirt with gold and light blue patterns on it, long grey shorts and blue flip flops.

In Yo-kai Watch 3 and later episodes of the Yo-kai Watch anime series, Nathan wears a red short-sleeved jacket with white stars on the arms that he wears open. Beneath his jacket, he wears a teal shirt with a white rim. He wears light beige cargo ankle pants with brown high-top sneakers with black laces and a light brown belt.

In M03, Nate wears a white hoodie under a short sleeved, red open jacket with baggy, dull teal trousers and brown trainers.

In the games, Nate wears short sleeved, blue shirt pyjamas which can sometimes be seen in the anime. When visiting the Hot Springs, Nate wears white swim shorts with a red trim. When in the Cluvian Continent, Nate wears an explorers outfit consisting of a beige helmet with a wisp shaped headlamp, a beige short sleeved top with a red under shirt, long shorts with a brown belt and brown shoes. He wears an outfit similar to this in Yo-kai Watch! albeit without the headlamp, the shirt has long sleeves, the under shirt is a dark teal, the shorts are now baggy and longer and he wears higher boots. In Illusory Sparkopolis, during the Next HarMEOWny minigame, Nate wears a Next HarMEOWny outfit.

As an adult, his appearance has notably aged but it retaining some key features such as the three cowlicks on his hair albeit muted and now wears a simpler dark-blue shirt vest over his cyan t-shirt.

Personality

Nate is a carefree person where his personality gains him many friends, while he enjoys being with them and the Yo-kai he befriended, even when they can be troublesome. However, one noticeable trait is how extremely average he is; this spreads even to his hobbies and school marks, which greatly annoys him. Like most kids, Nathan does basic things, like watching television, messing up his room, staying up late at night to watch television or play games. However, he is very righteous and has a strong sense of justice when a real crisis pops up.

Nathan's dynamic with his friends is somewhat influenced by the presence of Yo-kai on his life, when a Yo-kai influences the personality of one of his friends through inspiriting, he usually tries to confront said Yo-kai, most of the times with the help of a Yo-kai he has befriended, to get them to stop. That said, sometimes Nathan gets somewhat "in need" of a Yo-kai which is inspiriting his friends, and tries to get said Yo-kai to inspirit him, with less-than-positive results.

Most of the time, similarly, Nate gets inspirited by a Yo-kai, which gives a stained impression of him to his friends, but especially to Katie, as seen with Rockabelly, Dandoodle, Cheeksqueek, So-Sorree, among several other cases. Nate also goes through many attempts to be more than just an average person, such as getting the attention of Katie as a soulmate, rather than just a friend, as he has a crush on her. Most of his efforts almost always tend to come off as comedic towards everyone else, which causes great embarrassment towards him and his friends.

Relationships

Humans

Katie

Katie is Nate's childhood crush with Whisper and Jibanyan being the only ones to truly know Nate's secret feelings for her. In the games and anime, the feelings are never reciprocated as all Nate's attempts to woo her often make him seem weird and creepy to her.

30 years later, in the Shadowside series, Katie is now Nate's wife and the mother of Summer and Tate.

Bear and Eddie

Nate is close friends with both of them and they are seen hanging out a lot. They often participate in bug catching contests together and have a little big of a rivalry.

Nate's parents

Though Nate and his father have an average relationship with each other, his mother seems to have anger issues when her son Nate doesn't obey her but despite this, she's a loving mother who cares for her son and she also occasionally likes to embarrass Nate when he is seen around his friends.

Hailey Thomas

Even after meeting Hailey Anne during the quest to meet Lord Enma, he only coincides with her a few times. Nate is a bit taken aback by her high-energy personality but Hailey thinks highly of him because of how famous he is among Yo-kai.

Summer

Summer is Nate's daughter, and successor after he forgot about the Yo-kai and the watch when he became an adult.

Tate

Tate is Nate's youngest son whom strongly resembles him.

Yo-kai

Jibanyan

As with the Yo-kai he is friends with, Nathan likes Jibanyan (though he was appalled initially when Jibanyan moves to his house and behaves recklessly, and he even got into an argument with him) enough to be his first usual choice when summoning a Yo-kai, and his bond with him is strong enough to Jibanyan to take part in most of his antics.

Whisper

Nathan does not look high on Whisper's lack of knowledge about Yo-kai, as well as his needs to feed his craving for attention and his ego, though he does appreciate his presence to an extent.

Usapyon

The two didn't interact much when first meeting, yet they became good friends. This never prevents Nate from becoming a victim of his Invader Mode. Despite some flaws they may have while interacting, the two are close to an extent as Usapyon will normally stay at Nate's place whenever Hailey does something that upsets him gravely and fails to apologize, or sometimes even realize, for what she has done.

Lord Enma

In M02, Lord Enma first interacts with Nate when Nate saves him from falling construction materials. Lord Enma uses Nate as practice for his time manipulation. Despite basically killing Nate, it seems that Nate's actions are what gave Lord Enma trust in human and Yo-kai relations. They seem to become friends at the end of the movie since Nate is seen summoning Lord Enma in later episodes of the anime.

In Yo-kai Watch 3, Lord Enma befriends Nate through The Enma Note quest. Although he befriends him simply to help when facing Ed Zoff and his Yo-kai partners, in the end he tells Nate he thinks they are true friends and declares him to be quite 'king-like'.
