Overseer is a massive Yo-kai that holds the appearance of a dark sun with a red eye in the centre and is surrounded by a mass of purple clouds. He is carrying a large spear-like weapon. Though often only seen with two arms, he appears to have three more, each of which carries a spear.
In his final form in Yo-kai Watch Shadowside, he has the appearance of a giant, hulking beast. He has a huge, gaping mouth and six, dark, spiritual arms. He has 7 eyes: 3 running down each cheek, and 1 floating above his head.
He mostly appears in the Shadowside anime as a single black mass with his eye, likely because of what happened in Yo-kai Watch: Forever Friends.
In the opening cutscene of Yo-kai Watch 4, Overseer is shown to be able to freeze time and turn others to stone. He can also detach his arms from his body and can use a red and black shield to negate the damage taken from attacks.
In his true form, Maten Soranaki is a Yo-kai oni humanoid of pale mauve color, it has 4 horns with black tips, its hair is of a pink/purple gradient. He wears black armor, filled with blue and pink patterns, an eye is located at his chest. Purple smoke envelops him from behind.
Profile[]
Yo-kai Watch 4[]
Overseer is seen fighting with Enma in the opening cutscene. Enma appears to be winning, only to be turned to stone, and seemingly killed.
Overseer appears in Chapter 5, manipulating Fukurou, with Hailey seeing it. He then infects him, kidnaps Usapyon and leaves.
Later, at the Enma Budokai he reappears and reveals that the only way to defeat Enma was to destroy Shien's and Alistair's souls before they fuse into Yasha Enma. After failing at this, Yasha Enma proceeds to explain Overseer's plans, revealing that he will reincarnate into Enma. He then is supposedly destroyed by the six Yo-kai Watch Masters.
After being defeated, he is seen in the future Yo-kai World spreading the Gloom to many Yo-kai making them very hostile, causing chaos to reign over the Yo-kai World.
He is fought in this form again in the Future Enma Palace. After being defeated, he brings the Gloom to Uptown Springdale. He is fought in his Maten form as the final boss of the game at Mt. Wildwood's Sacred Tree.

Yo-kai Watch: Forever Friends[]
Overseer is described as a dormant entity that almost drove the entire Yo-kai race to extinction in the past. He is the one responsible for transforming Shien into Maou Shien.
Overseer fully manifests himself at the time of the Enma Budokai, upon Shien being overwhelmed by and the combined efforts of Kenshin Amaterasu, Neko'ou Bastet, Kappa'ou Sangjou, and Tengu'ou Kurama. When Shien eventually gives into despair, Overseer manifests himself from the Mikado Tribe Yo-kai and envelopes his body, transforming him into Maou Shien, and easily turns the tables on Amaterasu and the Godside Yo-kai, forcing them to retreat and revert themselves respectively. Maou Shien's power sends a wave of terror upon the attendees of the tournament, who immediately flee in fear of being destroyed. Realizing the magnitude of the threat, Zazel suggests awakening Shien's inner conscience, but Ancient Enma states no Yo-kai could pass his barrier; however, Alistair, being already in a state of death, could do so, and after a brief reluctance from his friends, he is sent to Maou Shien's body.
However, Maou Shien melts, and the liquid allows Overseer to access a flesh form. He then attempts to absorb the hatred of the Yo-kai World. After Ancient Enma and Zazel teleport the remains of the arena to the human world in order to minimize the casualties, Overseer states the hatred in the Yo-kai World was nothing compared to that of the human world and makes true to his statement by immediately growing stronger to the point of wielding infinite power. However, at this point, Alistair has already found Shien's spirit and fused with it, becoming Yasha Enma, and after emerging from Overseer's body, he engages the evil Yo-kai in combat by summoning Ryuutou Benibana. Overseer answers to this by summoning Yamata no Orochi, and after the eight-headed serpentine Yo-kai is overpowered by Ryuutou Benibana and Ryuutou Rasetsu, he summons the Sword Bearer Asura, who becomes a literal sword and quickly turns the tables of the battle by trapping Yasha Enma and nulifying both Benibana and Rasetsu by snatching the Enma Rod.
Shortly after, Overseer notices Suu-san regaining his Kusanagi sword and promptly launches an attack to the heroes, only for his barrage to be cut short by the newly resurfaced Gunshin Susanoo. Overseer is then forced to let loose of his grasp of Yasha Enma by an attack from the newly awoken Genbu, and then has the Enma Rod snatched by Byakko. Now engaging all these four opponents in combat, Overseer is evenly matched by them, even though their combined attacks have no effect on him. Overseer quickly recovers and dispatches Genbu and Byakko, and briefly regains the upper hand. However, he is eventually defeated by Yasha Enma through a single strike from the Amenomurakumo created by Susanoo being empowered by the Yo-kai in the human world, exploding in a huge light and releasing the souls collected by Shien.
However, a reduced and depowered Overseer makes a last-ditch attempt to take the heroes with him by attacking Jack and Tae from behind, only to be purified by a single kick from the newly manifested Gesshin Tsukuyomi.
Yo-kai Watch Shadowside[]
Overseer returns later on in the far future of 2040.
According to Lord Ananta, Overseer is the Yo-kai responsible for spreading "the Gloom", a virus capable of turning Yo-kai hostile by turning the wickedness inside their heart into power. His first official debut was in episode 14, being the voice that told Fukurou to keep fighting until his last breath, before turning him into Shinmagunshin Fukurou.
A Shinma, an agent of the Gloom, appears in SS037, where it interrupts the confrontation between the Yo-kai Detective Agency, Shutendoji, and Voidera. They easily defeat Douketsu and Shutendoji, but it's defeated by Summer, who briefly awakens as Juno to destroy it.
As of SS043, Overseer has been making advances against Summer, since he is aware that she is the reincarnation of Juno, the only one who can stop him.
In SS046, it was revealed that gathering the Sacred Armory wasn't meant to awaken Juno within Summer, but it was rather to fully awaken Overseer himself.
In SS048, it was revealed that he was once a loyal servant to Juno named Saros, and the two then soon fell in love. Later, after finding out that Saros supposedly had plans to kill Juno's father, Juno had her guards lock him up in an underground dungeon where he grew full of hatred, thus becoming Overseer.
In SS049, he fights Juno, but often faced interference, such as Shutendoji blocking his spike attack and Juno being defended by Boreas. He was finally defeated by Acala Exalted.
Y School Heroes[]
- Main article: Bousou Maten Soranaki
Etymology[]
- "Soranaki" could be translated as "Skyless" or "Sky Decease" or "Dead sky."
- "Haten Soranaki" literally means, "Sky destroyer Soranaki."
- "Maten Soranaki" literally means, "Demon Sky Soranaki."
- "Overseer" is likely a joke on his appearance as an eye watching from above.
Origin[]
Legends of Soranaki were first brought up based on an interpretation that the sun is a youkai, as the saying, "When the sun rises, the youkai vanish," could be interpreted as the sun is actually the most powerful youkai. Since this legend was created in the 21st century, there are no records of this youkai's folklore from ancient times.
Trivia[]
- Overseer is the third final Boss Yo-kai to appear in an anime series. Maten Soranaki, however, is exclusive to the games.
- If his battle in Chapter 9 is counted right after Shien and the interventions, Overseer has the most phases out of all bosses in the Yo-kai Watch games, with a total of 7 phases, as opposed to Kanaendesu, who has 1 phase only.
- Maten Soranaki's battle theme is the longest battle theme in the entire series, spanning a total of five minutes and forty seconds, beating Rongo Swirll's battle theme which had a total of five minutes and eight seconds.
- Super Sly accidentally revealed that he was the final boss during his explanation.
- According to Lord Enma in episode 21 of Y School Heroes, Mikettio's strength is compared to be the same as Overseer.
- He, Ananta, and the Sacred Armory are the first things (Ananta and Overseer are Yo-kai) from Yo-kai Watch Shadowside to have localized western names.
- Overseer's second form, Haten Soranaki, can only be fought in spin offs such as Yo-kai Watch: Puni Puni and Yo-kai Sangokushi: Kunitori Wars. Aside from that, Haten Soranaki's only appearance outside of spin offs, is the anime series itself, being Yo-kai Watch: Shadowside.
- Haten Soranaki has unused icons in the files for Yo-kai Watch 4.
- Though his true form never appeared in the anime, his Bousou form appeared in the second season of Y School Heroes.
- In the Chinese release of Yo-kai Watch 4++, Overseer has an altered design where he has a green hue rather than red. This change may be to remove the notion of blood.
