The Red Box (Japanese: 赤い箱 Akai hako) is an item that appears in Yo-kai Watch 2 and Yo-kai Watch 3. It is given by a human to the player, but is not advised to open it, activating one of the random events that happen in the game.
The effects that happen when being opened vary. While items can be found in the box, other unusual occurrences can happen.
Overview[]
It's a red box, with a yellow decal, tied with purple string containing a bow. The box can contain any object, or cause unexpected events if opened. The person who gives out the box is always a man that wears a yellow vest, blue shorts and black shoes, and he appears at random during any time of day. Though the event is mostly identical in Yo-kai Watch 3, it doesn't occur within BBQ. If the player slips and falls, there's a chance that the Red Box will open on its own. Additionally, in Yo-kai Watch 3, The box will occasionally call the player, encouraging them to open it.

If the player opens the Red Box, unexpected things will happen, which depends on when the man who gives the player the box spawns.

If the box is opened on purpose, the following can happen:
- Getting attacked by Sir Berus
- Receiving 10-Cent Gum
- Getting an afro for 30 minutes
- Trip more often for 30 minutes
- Fart uncontrollably (if male)/Have a heart trail follow you (if female) for 30 minutes
- Canine Time
If the box is opened by accident, the following can happen:
- An item.
- Canine Time
- Fart uncontrollably (if male)/Have a heart trail follow you (if female) for 30 minutes
If the player gives back the Red Box to the man upon finding him again randomly, he will give the player an item.
Yo-kai Watch 3[]
If the box is opened on purpose, the following can happen:
- Getting attacked by Hairum Scarum
- Play as Gargaros during Terror Time
- Getting an afro for 30 minutes
- Trip more often for 30 minutes
- Fart uncontrollably (if male)/Have a heart trail follow you (if female) for 30 minutes
- Canine Time
If the player gives back the Red Box to the man upon finding him again randomly, he will give the player an item.

In the anime[]
The Red Box makes an appearance in Dog Days, where Nate unexpectedly receives it from a human while on a walk. He opens it, and becomes a dog.
Trivia[]
- The Red Box may be inspired by the Tamatebako from the myth of Urashima Tarou. In the myth, Urashima Tarou receives a lacquered box from Otohime as he is leaving the Dragon Palace, and is told not to open it. When he does open it out of shock, he instantly ages into an old man - the box contained Urashima's old age.
- In Yo-kai Watch 2, despite being considered an "On Friend" effect, it cannot be applied to Yo-kai themselves
