—Whisper, after being freed from the capsule in Yo-kai are Real!.

Whisper (Japanese: ウィスパー Wisupā) is a Yo-kai and one of the main characters of the anime series. He met Nate in the episode Yo-kai are Real!.

Appearance[]

Nonuttin[]

As Whispocrates, he had black markings on the sides of his head, akin to sideburns, and his wisp is colored black and tied into a topknot resembling hair and his body was cream in color instead of his usual stark white. He also wore a yellow kimono with "#" symbols printed over it, similar to the clothes worn by Hidabat.

Present[]

Whisper has a white wisp-like body that has two limpy arms attached, with eyes that have a curved black mark in-between them. He also has purplish blue lips and a white set of teeth. He has a wisp on top of his head that resembles an ice cream swirl, as well as at the bottom that always move whilst he floats.

Shadowside Whisper[]

Similar to how he looked thirty years prior, this Whisper retains his ghost-like appearance, but lacks the thick, black line between his eyes and the purplish blue lips, though he does sport a similar, creepy grin.

He has purple hair on top of his head, which is in a wisp-like hairstyle. He also appears to have a hollow nose, similar to a skull, and two lime green eyes with yellow pupils. He has pointy ears and his fully defined hands have long, sharp nails.

He wears a black suit that melts seamlessly into his ghostly tail, similar to Verygoodsir, with a white undershirt, and a pink bowtie.

Personality[]

Although Whisper is often treated as one of the main gag characters of the anime, he is also shown to be a loyal, uptight yet fun-loving and caring Yo-kai. Especially since he takes on the role of being Nate’s (and later on, Summer's) Yo-kai Butler. He also has a somewhat narcissistic side as he always describes himself as the best, when given the chance. Though, this may only be to hide his insecurity as being one of the “least favorite/popular characters” of the series, as shown in “Yo-kai Yoink”.

As of the Shadowside series, he is seen to have matured quite a bit during the thirty years. Though, he still retains some of his old personality such as his playfulness, as it has a tendency to show at times. An example being when he hands over a cucumber, followed by a kiwi, to Summer after she asks for Kyubi’s Keystone. Despite this, he remains the same loyal butler to the Adams family throughout Summer's adventures with the Shadowside Detective Agency.

Abilities[]

Insect Attraction[]

Though, this was only shown once during the first episode of the original series, he is shown to be able to attract insects with little to no effort.

Intangibility[]

As a Yo-kai, Whisper can pass through solid objects if he needs to. He also sleeps half-afloat and half-buried in Nate’s bedroom floor.

Shapeshifting[]

Usually done for gags, Whisper has the ability to change the shape and forms of his body to fit his current mood or the current situation.

Fusion[]

He can fuse with Jibanyan to become Buchinyan and with Shogunyan to become Whissogun.

Immortality[]

As shown throughout the series, Whisper can not be killed by any means as he is still shown to be alive after being cut to pieces, electrocuted, blown up, turned into a zombie, among other things.

Anime Appearances[]

Yo-kai Watch[]

Prior Events[]

During the Sengoku Period (circa 1467 - 1603), he was a Yo-kai that caused everyone else to make up stories, and was known as Nonuttin.

WhisperSealedCapsuleMachine

Whisper, in a capsule being thrown into the Crank-a-kai, by an unnamed priest.

It is unknown what happened to Whisper after his former master got killed during the war. Whisper was sealed in a capsule likely during the Meiji Period by an unidentified priest who thought all bad spirits were evil.

Season 1 (EP001 - EP076)[]

In Yo-kai are Real!, Whisper was finally freed from the Crank-a-kai by a curious young boy going by the name of Nathan Adams after being trapped for 190 years. He introduced himself as a Yo-kai, and gave the boy a Yo-kai Watch to wear on his wrist.

As the duo got to know each other, Whisper wanted to become a "Yo-kai Butler", so he could give out information relating to Yo-kai Nate finds out.

In EP027, he and Nate get the Yo-kai Watch Model Zero. Whisper attempted to try Nate's new watch, but his master refuses to let him. Upset, he bites Nate's arm and eats the Yo-kai Watch Model Zero. Jibanyan tells Nate he has to shove his arm into Whisper's mouth in order to switch watches, something Whisper called uncool.

Season 2 (EP077 - EP0150)[]

In EP130, Whisper sacrificed all his body parts in attempts to get the Yo-kai Watch Dream, but he kept failing. However, he did manage to get the Yo-kai Watch Dream by trading with Walkappa.

Season 3 (EP151 - EP214)[]

Yo-kai Watch![]

Yo-kai Watch Shadowside[]

At some point after events of the present series, Whisper has become a servant of Lord Enma, serving him alongside Zazel.

Relationships[]

Nate Adams[]

Whisper pledges loyalty to Nate by becoming his butler after being freed from the Crank-a-kai by him. Though he tries to be useful to Nate, he in fact, annoys Nate by dismissing his suspicions about Yo-kai, claiming he hadn't heard of a Yo-kai behind a supernatural event only to usually be proven wrong. Although Nate can be easily annoyed by Whisper's lack of useful knowledge about Yo-kai, he still holds a strong bond with him, as seen after being cut by Shogunyan, he cried his "death", only to reassure himself and share a warm moment. Their bond is stronger in the English dub than in the original Japanese. He uses the Yo-kai Pad very often because of his past history as Nonuttin (aka Whispocrates).

Jibanyan[]

Jibanyan was a cat that got ran over by a truck, then turning into a Yo-kai. Whisper and Jibanyan are both found around Nate very often so they end up interacting with each other a lot. Jibanyan is also the only one (besides Kin and Gin) who knows about Whisper's past form. In the dub, Jibanyan's characterised to like to beat up on Whisper more, when Nate first get the Yo-kai Watch Model Zero, Jibanyan says "If you want to switch watches, you have to punch Whisper in the face. I approve." In spite of this, Whisper and Jibanyan are friends.

They can also fuse together to become Buchinyan.

Komasan and Komajiro[]

Komasan had the unique personality of trying to eat Whisper's Ice cream- like head. Komajiro didn't meet him or Nate, so his brother possibly told Komajiro about him under the name of " Whiscream".

Hailey and Usapyon[]

Usapyon and Whisper don't get off to a good start as Whisper misreads his name as 'U-S-A-pyon'. The two are willing to work together beyond that short misunderstanding.

Tomnyan and Jerry[]

Verygoodsir[]

Whisper seems to have a rivalry with Verygoodsir. With both of them being butlers, Whisper often tries to outdo him.

Classic Yo-kai[]

Whisper has a huge amount of admiration and respect for all Classic Yo-kai, to the point where it can pass off as an obsession.

Trivia[]

  • He has a ability to attract bugs, as shown in the first episode of the original series, but has only ever done so once.
  • In EP170, it is revealed that he can grow body hair. In this segment’s case, armpit hair.
    • This is further proven to not just be a one-time gag since he has a full head of hair in the Shadowside series.
  • In EP130, it is revealed that his “antenna”, tail, lips alongside the black marking in-between his eyes are all detachable.
  • He is the only Yo-kai in the Shadowside series to not have his personality and attitude drastically change from his original series counterpart.
    • Additionally, both present and Shadowside Whisper still can not provide the necessary information without their Yo-kai Pad.
    • He is the only Yo-kai to share the same voice actor for both the original and Shadowside series.
  • Despite still having contact with Jibanyan as shown in the movie, and having at least some memories of him, Whisper does not seem to have any contact with or any memory of Nate.
    • Though in SS001, he describes Tate as someone familiar, without knowing that he is, in fact, Nate's son. Meaning he may still remember Nate to some extent.
  • Contrary to his present self, he does not appear as often in the Shadowside series.
  • According to Junior in the seventh episode of the Shadowside series, Whisper smells like an old man.
    • This makes sense, since the earliest point in time Whisper was seen was when he was still Whispocrates in EP047 of the original anime, which took place from 1590 to 1600. Which would make present Whisper at least 420 years old and Shadowside Whisper to be at least 450 years old.
      • Additionally, with Komajiro revealing that he and his brother are over 300 years old, this would make Whisper at least a hundred years older than the two.
      • And as revealed in EP123, both Dismarelda and Happierre are over 400 years old, making them close to Whisper’s age.
  • In the Shadowside series, he becomes a fan of dad jokes as well as occasionally having the need to show off his muscles alongside Sly.
  • In SS018, he ends up resembling Gilgamish from the Fate series after using the beautifying app.
    • Additionally, both characters are voiced by Tomokazu Seki.
  • In EX001, he is revealed to be a fan of erotic media since he is seen reading an erotic magazine titled “Play Boy”.
  • He shares his first English voice actor with Wazzat and the two Robonyans.
  • Whisper, along with Dismarelda, Happierre, and Jibanyan is the first Yo-kai to be introduced in the Yo-kai Watch anime.
  • Unlike in the games and the anime, Whisper does not frequently use the Yo-kai Pad in the manga.
  • According to Yo-kai Watch!, Whisper has brown irises.
  • In EP020, he is shown to have green saliva.
