- Not what were you looking for? See Yo-kai Watch (disambiguation).
The Yo-kai Watch (Japanese: 妖怪ウォッチ Yōkai Wotchi) is a wristwatch that allows the wearer to communicate with Yo-kai. It can be used to detect Yo-kai by using it's searchlight, and summon them with Yo-kai Medals by inserting them into the clock's face. The watch itself appears in throughout all depictions of the Yo-kai Watch franchise, acting as one of the main focuses.
Very few people have been known to own a Yo-kai Watch, usually by communicating with a Yo-kai, whether it be a destined meeting or an unexpected encounter. One of the most notable owners is Nathan Adams, who got his from freeing Whisper at the Crank-a-kai in Mt. Wildwood.
There have been known to be many different kinds of Yo-kai Watch Models, with some only being compatible with certain Yo-kai Medals, or ones that use Yo-kai Keystones instead to summon Yo-kai. Some of them were produced by Yopple Inc., such as the Model U and Dream, while others were created differently.
Overview[]
History[]
Before the Yo-kai Watch existed, there was an item called the Elder Magic Mirror (Japanese: エルダ魔導鏡 Eruda Madōkyō) that was created by the ancient Genyou tribe. It would be later modified into the Yo-kai Watch Arcane, where King Enma and Zazel had originally kept it but was passed down into the human world, where Alistair had it for safekeeping. It had likely been scarce since then, and is passed down to select humans worthy of operating it.
It is implied that the Yo-kai Watch came into public existence many centuries ago, being one of the first products to be invented by Yopple Inc., a company specalizing in technology for the Yo-kai World. Very little is known how it fared at the time, except that Whisper may have originally had one on hand prior to being sealed away in the Crank-a-kai for 190 years before Nathan Adams sets him free and becomes the Yo-kai Watch's new owner.
The very first human-made Yo-kai Watch, called the Yo-kai Watch Model Zero was created sixty years prior to Nate's time, by a human named Nathaniel Adams. It was made from parts of an old wristwatch and several other components, including a mysterious marble which was the part that allowed Yo-kai to be communicated with. It also allowed the user to summon Classic Yo-kai and several others that didn't have a Yo-kai Medallium number on the top-right corner on their Yo-kai Medal, which was an unexpected breakthrough.
Yopple Inc. started to mass-produce the Model Zero decades after the original creation despite the inventor being lost to time for unknown reasons. When the original creator had been found, Steve Jaws temporarily resigned from the company, where Mark Orckerberg took his place, paving way for the Yo-kai Watch U's production. The Yo-kai Watch U Prototype was released to select owners whom were given a chance to try out the product before it's release, where one of the models were apparently stolen by Usapyon to persuade a human girl named Hailey Thomas into becoming a Yo-kai Watch wielder.
Sometime after Steve Jaws comes back on board to the company, he invents the Yo-kai Watch Dream which is capable of playing win-or-lose roulette summons which affects the outcome of several Yo-kai.
Between the thirty year gap before the events of Yo-kai Watch Shadowside, all of the existing models were destroyed, except for the Yo-kai Watch Arcane, which was almost complete.
Appearance[]
The Yo-kai Watch is usually worn on the left arm, that takes the appearance of a wristwatch. The strap has a buckle that can be tightened and detached from the Yo-kai Watch depending on the model. It only fits on those who are chosen to handle the Yo-kai Watch, where anyone else who tries to operate it won't function or retaliate from them.
Depending on the model, the color scheme varies along with several design features. Most of the watches have the same clock-face design that are blue, green, pink and purple in color with the clock handles that spin around when a Yo-kai is being summoned. The searchlight is also different between each model, where the original Yo-kai Watch has it come out like a searchlight while the Yo-kai Watch Dream has it from the clock-face.
Though Yo-kai Watch models are created with microchips and fragments as an internal component, the exact mechanical functions are currently unknown. It's likely that it is made with materials that allow Yo-kai to be summoned and seen with it, as the mysterious marble is a possible source. The Yo-kai Watch Arcane has mechanical machinery present that move around during the summoning.
Functions[]
The Yo-kai Watch is an unique piece of technology which helps humans to uncover and communicate with Yo-kai, a feat normally impossible without the use of this device. Conversely, the Yo-kai Watch is useful for Yo-kai to communicate with humans.
The real power of the Yo-kai Watch, however, is the ability granted to the user to summon Yo-kai they have previously befriended by inserting their respective Yo-kai Medals into the gap. Each of the eight primary tribes of Yo-kai have their own summoning song, as well as their surge of light sporting the respective color of their tribe symbols. If a Yo-kai Medal is inserted in the wrong way, the summon will not happen and will warn the user that it cannot be summoned, usually that of the Nosirs or the Yo-kai Watch's voice in other models.
When Yo-kai are summoned, they are transported via a circular portal with gratifying force on them to the user's place where the Yo-kai get transported. Other Yo-kai may join the summon, which happens occasionally by joining in on the circular portal. It can be hard to deny the summon, due to the force being difficult to get out of. Yo-kai cannot be summoned from miles away, due to the Yo-kai Watch not being able to handle long-distance communication. Summoning Yo-kai is apparently disabled on specific holidays so Yo-kai can get a break from being used as combat.
Other Models[]
Over time, there have been several successors of the Yo-kai Watch or other versions of it. Certain models can only summon specific Yo-kai Medals that are compatible.
Yopple Inc. is known to be releasing new models that is usually given to Yo-kai Watch bearers before they go on public sale.
Known Watches[]
Original series[]
Yo-kai Watch (Japanese: 妖怪ウォッチ Yōkai Wotchi)
This Yo-kai Watch model is the most often-seen variant. It allows the user to summon Yo-kai which have silver-framed and gold Yo-kai Medals of the first five Legendary Yo-kai. Whenever a Yo-kai Medal is inserted into the Yo-kai Watch, it plays a special tribe-specific summoning song.
It is a silver watch with button and a blue lamp and lens that activates when the button is pressed. the watch face has a pink, light-blue, purple and green colored abstract wisps that revolve around a black background. the beta version of the watch in the manga needed to shine its light on the Yo-kai for it to visible, while the official one made it permanent. In a parallel universe only in anime, first and second games, Katie's Yo-kai Watch model looks noticeably different: it is designed in the grounds of a pocket watch, complete with a strap, emblazoned with heart patterns. Despite its appearance, it has the same functions and features as the regular model. In Yo-kai Watch♪, there is a special version of this watch that is compatible will all Yo-kai medals correspondent to the previous Yo-kai Watches, except the Yo-kai Watch Arcane worn by Nate. |
|
Yo-kai Watch Model Zero (Japanese: 妖怪ウォッチタイプ零ゼロ式 Yōkai Wotchi Taipu Zero-shiki)
This model was conceived/invented by Nathaniel/Kenny 60 years before the events of the original series, making it the very first usage of a Yo-kai Watch. In the anime, this model would later be mass-produced by Steve Jaws.
It allows the user to summon Yo-kai that have Z-Medals which have green frames and of ones that didn't appear originally, Classic Yo-kai which have Classic Medals (with dull red frames), the remaining Legendary Yo-kai Spoilerina, Poofessor, and Slurpent) and the Wicked Yo-kai. Yo-kai not belonged in said groups cannot be summoned; however, they can update their medals (as seen with Jibanyan) to allow their summoning. Barring the Wicked tribe, none of the summoning songs have lyrics; instead using instrumental variants. It resembles an old watch. The watch face is retained, but the body is red with a white digitized 0, 1 and 2, with the zero at the medal slot and the 1 on the right and 2 on the left. A yellow dial is attached to the body. The watch strap is blue with a bulb on the outside. The summon is trigged by inserting the medal, turning the arrow to "1" to play the summoning song while setting the device on standby and dragging it to "2" in order to summon the Yo-kai. |
|
Yo-kai Watch Model U (Japanese: 妖怪ウォッチUユー Yōkai Wotchi Yū)
The prototype model created by Mark Orckerberg, the newer CEO of Yopple Incorporated. It is a light blue watch with a dark blue strap, a red indicator and a yellow arrow to show where to insert. The light is now a transparent led which flashes the respective color of the summoned Tribe (except rainbow B Medals and Legendary Yo-kai medals, which have a multicolored flash).
It has backwards compatibility with previous medal types, allowing it to use Regular, Z, and Classic Medals, as well as being able to summon Present Yo-kai with U-Medals designed specifically for use in this model and 'Merican Medals for 'Merican Yo-kai. Each summon begins with a Yo-kai announcer saying "Ladies and Gentlemen, it's...", then stating the tribe of the Yo-kai being summoned. Summoning songs are different from previous models, and each feature a small Yo-kai chorus in a different background, similar to a performing stage. Likewise, Song Medals can be used in this model, each featuring an extended version of the summoning song for solo Yo-kai, and a radically different song for Yo-kai in groups. According to Orckerberg, this model has the potential to continue evolving, as hinted by a small slot on the left side of the watch, which was used in real life to download online data from SD cards. |
|
Later on, an upgrade for the Model U was released, allowing the Yo-kai Watch to summon Legendary VIP Yo-kai, as seen with T. Energison. Completing the update allows the Yo-kai Watch Model U to reach its perfect form. There are at least five color schemes to choose from, even though two of them are used. Both have a long ghost tail on the strap. Nate chooses the light-blue Model U1 color and Hailey chooses the yellow Model U2 color.
In the video games, both Nate and Hailey start out with the Model U1/U2 of the Yo-kai Watch Model U, in a similar way how they had gotten their Yo-kai Watches in the anime, though Nate had retrieved his soon after settling into his new home in St. Peanutsburg. The 2 models were released as upgrade kits in real life, with the top cover blocking the SD slot with the version E.
During the events of the second movie, Nate attempts to summon Lord Enma with his Model U1, but he fails. However, his watch carried some power to Hailey's Model U2 and both Yo-kai Watches temporarily assume the Yo-kai Watch Model U - Version E (Japanese: 妖怪ウォッチUユーバージョンEイー Yōkai Wotchi Yū: Bājon Ī) model to be strong enough to break the King Yo-kai seal. According to the toy, It has the a red body and the strap is red with a black stripe and the Enma insignia. Hailey received a copy of Lord Enma's medal and she and Nate used both of their watches at the same time to summon Lord Enma.
Yo-kai Watch Dream Model (Japanese: 妖怪ウォッチドリーム Yōkai Wotchi Dorīmu)
The Yo-kai Watch Dream was developed by Steve Jaws in exile after stepping down from Yopple and Mark Orckerberg taking his place.
It is red with a blue stripe and stars, with a white body, which is similar to American flag. It has a gold plating on top with 8 bulbs, while the watch face's wisps are actual wisps. In EP130, Nate, Whisper, Jibanyan, Hidabat, and Tomnyan visited Dream Land to participate in a roulette game to win various prizes, including the Yo-kai Watch Dream Model, which they had arrived to obtain. Because of their poor luck, Whisper trades off his body parts for tokens since he doesn't have a Yo-kai Medal. He doesn't outright win the watch yet manages to obtain it by trading off the items he did get. Like the Yo-kai Watch Model U, all Yo-kai Medals can be inserted into the watch and summoned correctly, and has a series of Medals, the Dream Medals, that will work solely with the Yo-kai Watch Dream Model. Coinciding with Yo-kai Watch Busters 2, the Treasure medals were released to work with this model. When a Yo-kai Medal is inserted into the watch, the Watch announces "It's a (tribe name) time! (Event/food) Roulette!" as the bulbs on the watch light up, then put that Yo-kai through a challenge of luck that determines how they feel when they are summoned; unavoidably due to this gimmick, this Watch model sometimes causes problems for the Yo-kai who is summoned. When they win, they get a giant victorious fanfare with cheering in the background, while when they lose they get a lose fanfare and a chorus reciting what they did get instead with some samba music, then with a final fanfare, the Watch plays a laugh track at the Yo-kai's misery. The Yo-kai Watch Dream Model is powerful enough to summon Lord Enma without assistance, as shown in EP138 when Nate summons Lord Enma solo style to battle El Gutso implying that this is the strongest Yo-kai Watch.[1] The 7 types of Roulettes are Sushi (Japanese: 寿司ネタルーレット Sushi-neta Rūretto), Dream (Japanese: ドリームルーレット Dorīmu Rūretto), Shopping Mall Lottery (Japanese: 商店街福引きルーレット Shōten-gai Fukubiki Rūretto), Tempura (Japanese: 天ぷらルーレット Tenpura Rūretto), Vending Machine (Japanese: 自動販売機ルーレット Jidō Hanbaiki Rūretto), Christmas Present (Japanese: クリスマスプレゼントルーレット Kurisumasu Puresento Rūretto), and Seat Changing (Japanese: 席替えルーレット Sekigae Rūretto). The biggest departure from typical Yo-kai Watches, however, is the fact that the Yo-kai Watch Dream Model has special gear that is designed to work with it via a function called Dream Link, and as such, can be detached from its base and attached to other items. Unlike its predecessor, it uses a Micro SD chip to install updates. In the anime, unlike in the video game, Hailey Anne never received a Yo-kai Watch Dream Model, thus her Yo-kai Watch Model U2 got the ability to read Dream Medals. |
|
Kuroi Yo-kai Watch (Japanese: 黒い妖怪ウォッチ Kuroi Yōkai Wotchi)
This model seems to only appear in an alternate world -known as the Dark World-. Its creator is unknown.
This model is unique in that it is actually a Yo-kai, being sentient, and instead of searching for Yo-kai, its light -purple in color- scans a human and causes a being sealed in the watch to swallow the human whole, after that it spits him/her out transformed into a Yo-kai -as seen with Kemushi-otoko, Mukade-otoko, Hae-otoko and Kamakiri On'na (Nate, Bear, Eddie, and Katie respectively). The toy, which cannot be updated as its Sd slot is blocked off, has backwards compatibility and has set of medals, known as the Kuroi Medals, that work with it. |

Yo-kai Watch[]
One summer day while trying to catch bugs for a summer project, Nate or Katie (depending on which character the player is using) receives a Yo-kai Watch courtesy of a freed Whisper, who instructs them to use its light to uncover Yo-kai. They uncover Buhu in order to begin combat, which began a series of misadventures that lead to the discovery of a diabolical plot.
After the player defeats the would-be usurper McKraken, the Yo-kai Watch fades along with the Yo-kai out of the character's sight as the seal transports all Yo-kai back into the Yo-kai World, though the Yo-kai Watch and all Yo-kai eventually return.
Yo-kai Watch 2[]
One night, Kin and Gin (with Bronzlow appearing as well in Psychic Specters) arrive over Nate or Katie's house while they were sleeping and watched the Yo-kai Watch vanish, along with the person's memories of meeting the Yo-kai.
The next day, the protagonist finds the Yo-kai Watch in the Memory Shop. The shop owner offers them to sell the Watch for a small amount of money, then to use it at the Crank-a-kai outside. They buy one of the capsules and drops it aside, revealing Whisper. The Yo-kai Watch restores the memories of both the protagonist and Whisper, including memories of Jibanyan. When the protagonist and Whisper reunite with Jibanyan, the Yo-kai Watch restores Jibanyan's memories as well.
After travelling 60 years into the past, the protagonist learns from Hovernyan about the Yo-kai Watch Model Zero. Whisper then explains the normal model was created by Steve Jaws. Sometime later, the protagonist gives Nathaniel/Kenny the main piece needed to finish the Yo-kai Watch Model Zero. Nathaniel/Kenny then entrusts the protagonist with the watch.
Yo-kai Watch 3[]
When his mother got inspirited by Cornfused after Nate finds her misplaced glasses, he discovers that his Yo-kai Watch can't operate in BBQ. Moping at the failure in his room, Whisper soon gives him the Yo-kai Watch Model U, which he traded in the Medallium to get to replace the Yo-kai Watch, allowing Nate to see 'Merican Yo-kai. Hailey Thomas later obtains her Yo-kai Watch Model U2 in the same manner she did in the anime, where it was through Usapyon's machinations that she got it outside the store, as the barcode on the box was illegitimate.
When Steve Jaws came to Nate's rescue after losing to The EXecutor, he gave Nate the Yo-kai Watch Dream in order to defeat him.
Mark Orckerberg later invites Nate, Hailey Anne, and several Yo-kai to his building, where all of the Yo-kai Watch models have been gathered and put on display. At the end of the chapter, Hailey Anne gets her own Yo-kai Watch Dream.
During a mission in Dukesville, Nate temporarily lends his watch to a local so that she can see a Yo-kai, and she returns the watch to him shortly afterwards. Similarly, Hailey Anne lends her watch to Professor Hughley in order to allow him to see Usapyon.

Yo-kai Watch anime series[]
In Yo-kai Are Real!, Nate returns to his house with Whisper and finds out that his parents are arguing. Whisper pointed out that it was caused by a spiritual being, and gives Nate the Yo-kai Watch, where Whisper instructs Nate to shine its light onto his parents; Dismarelda is found this way.
In Yo-kai Nosirs, Nate attempts to summon Jibanyan against the Nosirs, but he puts the medal in the wrong way, and doesn't figure out the problem until it is pointed out to him by the enemies. Nate thanking the Nosirs puts them in shock, as they don't usually get complimented, so they show their gratitude by having the leader fuse with the Yo-kai Watch, now alerting Nate whenever he inserts a medal the wrong way.
In The New Yo-kai Watch, Whisper and Nate witness Yopple CEO Steve Jaws' conference about the new Yo-kai Watch Model Zero through Whisper's Yo-kai Pad, explaining that he was able to mass-produce it with new technology, then announcing its release on the same day of the presentation.
After acquiring the new model, Nate tries to use it and learns he must use Z Medals to get it to work. Afterwards, Jibanyan gives Nate his three new medals and Nate finally uses it successfully. Accidentally, the Yo-kai Watch Model Zero ends inside Whisper's mouth, and Nate discovers he can switch between watch models by diving his hand into Whisper's mouth.
In Usapyon Is Here!, Hailey Anne Thomas finds a Yo-kai Watch Model U Prototype, labelled as a "Space Watch" in a hobby shop and decides to buy it after she finds out that it can communicate with aliens. Sometime later and believing it was a fake, she finds an unknown Yo-kai using its light during class, sparking a new interest on the watch. At home, using the watch, she finds Usapyon, who tells her about the Yo-kai Watch Model U and gives his Yo-kai Medal to test it.
In A New Watch!, following the announcement of Steve Jaws' stepping down from Yopple, the newly appointed CEO Mark Orckerberg unveils the Yo-kai Watch Model U and describes some of its features before ending his exposition claiming it was actually a prototype and handed to notable people in the Yo-kai World only, which makes Whisper feel angered, who set himself into going to purchase it. However, Hidabat emerges from Nate's closet with one of the prototypes, which it got to it's friendship with Orckerberg, as evidenced by a photo taken on Nate's room, and offers it to Nate, as the bat Yo-kai cannot use it. Nate tests his new watch with Jibanyan's old medal successfully, but expresses some lack of interests about its other features due to Cornfused possessing him.
In Christmas Blackout! Time for a Yo-kai Watch Update!, the two Watches get upgraded. Nate's watch becomes the light-blue Yo-kai Watch Model U while Hailey Anne's watch becomes the yellow Yo-kai Watch Model U2.
In Tomnyan Appears! Let's Get the Yo-kai Watch Dream!, Tomnyan informs Nate, Whisper and Jibanyan of the Yo-kai Watch Dream, and the four of them, along with Hidabat went to Dream Land and attempted to get it via the Roulette Machine. However, Jibanyan and Tomnyan are unsuccessful as well as Whisper, who ended up betting all of body parts except for his eyes and arms in lieu of not having a Yo-kai Medal. Whisper ended up getting the Yo-kai Watch Dream from Walkappa, via trading with other Yo-kai that were participating.
Yo-kai Watch Shadowside[]
It was revealed that every Yo-kai Watch model was destroyed since the events of the original series, under orders from the new Yo-kai ruler Lord Ananta. However, in the wake of the approaching Onimaro invasion, Enma and Mitsue Arihoshi reveal that an ancient object similar to a Yo-kai Watch, created by the Genyou Tribe, originally known as the Elda Magic Mirror and re-purposed into the Yo-kai Watch Arcane, was kept hidden and awaiting to accept a user in order to serve as a means to counter the Onimaro menace. After a series of failed 443 attempts in order for the Yo-kai Watch Arcane to accept a human user, Summer Adams receives it from Whisper and becomes the first person to hold a Yo-kai Watch after 30 years.
After Natsume succeds on removing the darkness on Cole's heart in order to save him from death by the rejection of the Kigan Gear, this artifact becomes the Ogre Seal Orb Mirror, which Enma renames as the Yo-kai Watch Ogre, and Cole is allowed to carry it in order to counter the effects of the Onimaro Possession and fight Oniou Rasen.
In SS001, the Yo-kai Watch Arcane accepts another user in addition to Summer, namely her younger brother, Tate Adams.
In SS013, for having proved his value to the Celestial, Bruno receives the Animas Heaven-Bearing Mirror from Suzaku, and renames it as the Yo-kai Watch Animas.

In real life[]
- Main article: Yo-kai Watch (merchandise)
Following their appearances in the anime, real-life replicas of the various models of the Yo-kai Watch are being released in Japan, each with two Yo-kai Medal replicas. More medals can be obtained by buying them in packs or by the Gashapon.
Trivia[]
- The Yo-kai Watch's design in the first video game and the manga is notably different from later appearances. The most notable difference is that the Yo-kai Medal goes inside the Yo-kai Watch rather than on the clock-face. Strangely, the design was kept for the manga before it was eventually replaced later on.
- In several Asian cultures, presenting a clock to somebody else is considered to be bad luck due to it being seen as either a symbol of death or running out of time. This likely foreshadows some of the death-defying experiences the Yo-kai Watch users suffer from being inspirited by the Yo-kai.
- The actual origins of the Yo-kai Watch are unknown, considering that the Yo-kai Watch Model Zero was not actually the first model to come into existence:
- Whisper got sealed away 190 years prior to the events of Nate freeing him and likely had a Yo-kai Watch on hand back then, contradicting the "first Yo-kai Watch model" to be created 60 years ago.
- Many centuries ago, the Elda Magic Mirror acted as one of the earliest precursors to the Yo-kai Watch before it was retooled into the Yo-kai Watch Arcane. It may have been scarce due to the limited usage, until it had been picked up for manufacturing purposes in Yo-kai Watch 4.
- In the first game, at the beginning of Chapter 4, Whisper states, talking about Mr. Goodsight, "The shopkeeper's family has been dealing with Yo-kai Watch for decades! They're actually the ones who created the Yo-kai Watch!". However, this is no longer referenced anywhere else.
- In the English dub of Yo-kai Are Real!, Whisper states that the Yo-kai Watch cannot be taken off which was a writing mistake, as Nate takes it off in later episodes.
- Curiously, Nate had never used the Yo-kai Watch Model Zero to search for Yo-kai in the anime series.
- The Yo-kai Watch Model U is the only Yo-kai Watch model to have multiple upgrade versions.
- The Yo-kai Watch Ogre can summon the least Yo-kai, with just 9*, while a fully-updated Yo-kai Watch Dream can summon over a thousand different Yo-kai Medals.
- Because of Yo-kai Watch! anime series, Nate is given the Yo-kai Watch Arcane Model K which is actually a prototype of the Yo-kai Watch Arcane used for testing. According to the fourth movie, the ancient Genyou tribe creating the early Yo-kai Watch Arcane before they finalize the Yo-kai Watch Arcane. Also, the Onechanside mechanic are removed and replaced by Lightside and Shadowside mechanic because the Onechanside is practically weird.
- On the subscriber's edition cover art for the second issue of the Yo-kai Watch IDW comic, Katie is shown with the same model of the watch as Nate, rather than the pink pocket watch-styled design.
