Origin[]
Zhou Wang (紂王), also known by his personal name Zi Shou (子受) and posthumous title Di Xin (帝辛), was the last king of the Shang (Yin) dynasty in ancient China, ruling during the 11th century BCE. He is remembered as the archetypal tyrant whose misrule brought an end to the Shang. According to historical records such as Sima Qian’s Records of the Grand Historian, he was intelligent and capable in his early reign, but grew arrogant, extravagant, and cruel. Later accounts describe him as indulging in excessive drinking, lavish feasts, and debauchery, and he became notorious for inventing severe punishments, including the infamous “Bronze Toaster” (炮烙刑), in which victims were forced to walk on heated bronze until they burned to death. His favorite consort, Daji (妲己), is often portrayed as encouraging his worst tendencies, though in mythological literature such as the Ming dynasty novel Fengshen Yanyi she is depicted as a malevolent fox spirit who bewitched him.
Under Zhou Wang’s harsh rule, discontent grew among nobles and commoners alike, which gave King Wu of Zhou justification to raise arms against him under the doctrine later known as the “Mandate of Heaven.” This culminated in the Battle of Muye (牧野之戰) around 1046 BCE, where the Shang army collapsed, many soldiers defected, and Zhou Wang retreated to his palace, where he set it ablaze and took his own life. His downfall marked the end of the Shang dynasty and the beginning of the Zhou dynasty.
